Mary Kanuho: A Life Lived On The Reservation

My grandmother was born on a cold winter day on December 25th, 1911 in Pinesprings, Arizona. Inside a mud-roof hogan, a medicine man sang delivery songs since there were no hospitals in the area at that time. The songs the medicine man sang were very important, they helped for a smooth delivery. The midwife boiled herbs inside the hogan to help relax the mother. Asdzáán Alts’isi, grandmother’s mother, was also instructed to drink this herb for four days. The delivery went by smoothly, and a new baby girl was born into this world.
